If you’re on Netflix or a fan of the horror genre you will have most certainly heard of American Horror Story. If not, I’m about to tell you why you NEED to watch it.
The horror genre has fallen a little by the wayside in the last few years. It’s almost become a teen squeal fest with very predictable story lines and narrative tactics. Enter American Horror Story which has blown everything else out of the water.
The show is an American horror anthology TV series. Every season is a self-contained mini-series, which has a beginning a middle and an end. Each season follows a set of disparate and deranged characters through a creepy, suspense driven story line. The gore is genuine, you will jump out of your skin and YOU WILL be freaked out.
Every series has a different theme but the eagle eyed among you will spot elements that link them all together. These narrative devices not only make the writing very clever but the story lines also address socioeconomic issues as well as class, race and disability.
Characters have been bought back from the dead, people have been torn limb from limb and Stevie Nicks even made a guest appearance…what more could you want?!
If you need any more convincing to go watch the first episode now, I wanted to share this awesome infographic created by My Voucher Codes which explains the five seasons (not including the current My Roanoke Nightmare) in detail, including which era they’re set in, which real-life events the story line and characters are based on and how the plots are intertwined across all the seasons.
One thing I haven’t yet talked about is how amazing the fashion is. The costume team deserves multiple awards as each series’ attire is ON POINT.
Below I’ve picked out the fashion winners from each season.
Season One: Murder House
The award for best dressed in the first season, Murder House, definitely goes to Violet Harmon. Her slightly grungy, 90s girl next door look is a la mode right now.
Season Two: Asylum
This series’ best dressed has got to be Frances Conroy’s Angel of Death. This angel takes away the suffering inmates of the insane asylum in absolute style. Black garms and red lips forever!
Season Three: Coven
The fashion in coven brings together two of my most favourite styles: 70s boho and goth. I love Misty’s Fleetwood Mac inspired maxi dresses and bohemian layers. And the witches’ all black gothic looks totally slay. I can’t pick a winner so here’s a few pictures of everyone looking awesome.
Season Four: Freak Show
Emma Roberts as a gypsy folk palm reader. This outfit is my absolute favourite. I love the short peplum sleeves on the crochet top and the tight pleated chiffon skirt. Plus the belt is very evocative of Misty’s style from Coven.
Season Five: Hotel
Lady Gaga as The Countess. Basically in every single scene she looks glamorous AF.
